Westchester County resident Christine Kenney O'Rourke, age 70, was killed on Sunday, June 11, while out for a walk when a sedan driven by a 54-year-old White Plains woman jumped the sidewalk on North Broadway (Route 9) in Yonkers, killing O'Rourke and then slamming into a nearby home.
Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said he was saddened to hear of the tragedy: "My heart goes out to the Kenney and O'Rourke families. Chris was very much involved with the community," Spano said.
Kenney O'Rourke, a resident of the neighborhood in Yonkers where the crash happened, was an aide to the Grand Marshal of the Yonkers Saint Patrick's Day Parade.
She held several positions with the Amackassin Club Board and was a trustee for the Yonkers Historical Society.
She was also a greeter at Untermyer Gardens and Conservancy and the daughter-in-law of former Yonkers Mayor Dr. James O'Rourke, Spano said.
"Her compassion for Yonkers is going to be sorely missed," the Mayor said. "My deepest condolences to all who knew her and were touched by her kind light."
Police have not released the name of the woman injured when the car slammed into the home located on North Broadway (Route 9) or the name of the driver.
